California’s building codes require specific plumbing standards that may surprise homeowners, especially when it comes to older homes that were built under different rules. Here’s what Bay Area homeowners need to know about current plumbing code requirements.
Key California Plumbing Code Requirements
- Water heater strapping: Two straps required (upper and lower third) per Health & Safety Code §19211
- Backflow prevention: Required on all potable water connections to prevent contamination
- Expansion tanks: Required on closed water systems (homes with a PRV or check valve)
- Lead-free fixtures: All new plumbing must use lead-free solder and fixtures per Safe Drinking Water Act
- Water conservation: Low-flow fixtures required: toilets (1.28 GPF), faucets (1.2 GPM), showerheads (2.0 GPM)
When Does Your Home Need to Meet Current Code?
Generally, your existing plumbing doesn’t need to be updated to current code unless you’re doing a renovation that involves replacing plumbing. However, during a whole house repipe, all new work must meet current California Plumbing Code (Title 24 Part 5).
