Napa County's residential gas infrastructure tells the story of more than 160 years of California growth. Pre-1900 homes in Napa Old Town, Calistoga's Lincoln Avenue Historic District, St. Helena's Main Street Historic District, and Yountville's Washington Street Historic Core were originally piped with threaded black iron gas lines that were later extended and patched with galvanized steel. The post-WWII residential expansion in central Napa — Alta Heights, Linda Vista, and Westwood — was constructed largely with galvanized steel gas pipe between 1945 and 1980, now 50 to 80 years old. Newer hillside developments in Silverado, Coombsville, Spring Mountain, and Howell Mountain mix later black iron with CSST flexible tubing from the 1990s and 2000s. American Canyon, the youngest city in the county, is built almost entirely with CSST.

Napa County is also defined by significant seismic exposure. The West Napa fault runs directly under the City of Napa and ruptured in the 2014 South Napa earthquake (M6.0), damaging gas-line infrastructure across the city and demonstrating clearly how rigid mid-century galvanized and black iron behaves under shaking. The regional Rodgers Creek and Hayward fault systems lie a short distance west and south. This seismic exposure makes replacing aging rigid gas pipe with flexible bonded CSST not just a maintenance decision but a documented safety upgrade.
