Your Contra Costa County
Repipe Specialists

Contra Costa County spans from the Richmond waterfront to the San Ramon Valley and the Delta communities of Antioch and Brentwood -- a broad geographic and demographic range with equally varied plumbing challenges. The county's western cities of Richmond, Martinez, and Concord have significant postwar housing stock with galvanized steel systems from the 1940s–60s now well past end of life. The Tri-Valley cities of San Ramon, Danville, and Brentwood represent a different era -- newer housing from the 1980s–2000s that may contain polybutylene or Kitec piping known for premature failure.

Repipe Champions serves all 10 cities throughout Contra Costa County. Our crews are familiar with the county's wide range of housing eras and construction types -- from Richmond's wartime shipyard worker housing to the grand older homes of Danville and the newer master-planned communities of San Ramon and Brentwood. Every repipe is permitted, inspected, and backed by our 30-year parts and labor warranty.

Whether your home has corroding galvanized steel from the 1950s, aging copper from the 1970s, or failing polybutylene from the 1990s, Repipe Champions provides the same comprehensive solution: a complete whole-house repipe with modern Uponor PEX-A or L-grade copper, fully permitted and warrantied for 30 years.

Does Your Contra Costa County Home Need a Repipe?

Contra Costa County's housing stock spans an unusually wide range of construction eras -- from the 1940s to the 2000s -- which means the county has a greater variety of pipe failure types than almost any other Bay Area county.

1940s–1960s: Galvanized Steel (Richmond, Concord, Martinez, Pleasant Hill, Walnut Creek)

The western and central portions of Contra Costa County were developed primarily in the postwar era. Richmond's housing boom began during World War II to serve shipyard workers, producing thousands of homes with galvanized steel plumbing that are now 80+ years old. Concord, Martinez, Pleasant Hill, and Walnut Creek experienced their primary growth in the 1950s and 1960s. Galvanized steel has a functional lifespan of 40 to 50 years, meaning every galvanized system in these cities has been past its expected end of life for decades. Symptoms include rust-colored water, severely reduced water pressure, and recurring pinhole leaks. The Monument Boulevard corridor in Concord, the older neighborhoods of downtown Walnut Creek, and the core of Pleasant Hill are among the most urgently affected areas.

1970s–1980s: Copper Systems (Walnut Creek, Danville, Pittsburg)

Homes built during the 1970s and 1980s in the expanding suburbs of Walnut Creek, Danville, and parts of Pittsburg were typically plumbed with copper. While copper is more durable than galvanized steel, Contra Costa County's hard water (averaging 12 to 20 grains per gallon depending on the water source) is particularly aggressive to copper pipe. Pitting corrosion, green staining at joints, and slab leaks are common in copper-era homes throughout the county. Homes on slab foundations are especially vulnerable because slab leaks in copper require either tunneling under the foundation or a complete repipe -- and a complete repipe is almost always more cost-effective.

1990s–2000s: Polybutylene and Kitec (Brentwood, San Ramon, Antioch, Danville)

Contra Costa County has one of the highest concentrations of polybutylene (PB) piping in the Bay Area. Homes built between 1978 and 1995 in Brentwood, San Ramon, Antioch, and parts of Danville may contain polybutylene -- a gray, blue, or black flexible plastic pipe that was the subject of a major class-action lawsuit and settlement (Cox v. Shell Oil) due to its tendency to deteriorate and fail without warning. Additionally, some homes built in the late 1990s through early 2000s may contain Kitec piping -- a composite pipe with brass fittings known to corrode and fail prematurely. Both materials should be proactively replaced before a catastrophic failure occurs. If you are unsure what pipe material your home contains, an inspection from Repipe Champions will provide a definitive answer. Inspection is a paid service, credited toward your repipe.

How Contra Costa County's Water Quality Affects Your Pipes

Contra Costa County has some of the hardest municipal water in the Bay Area. The Contra Costa Water District (CCWD) supplies much of the county from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, with hardness levels typically ranging from 12 to 20 grains per gallon -- significantly harder than water in San Francisco, San Mateo, or western Alameda County.

Hard water is particularly damaging to galvanized steel pipes because dissolved minerals (primarily calcium and magnesium) deposit on the interior pipe walls, accelerating the narrowing process that eventually restricts water flow. For copper pipes, hard water promotes pitting corrosion -- small holes that develop in the pipe wall, often manifesting first as slab leaks in homes on concrete foundations.

The Delta-sourced water supply also contains higher levels of organic matter than Sierra Nevada reservoir water, which affects taste and can contribute to biofilm formation inside aging pipe systems. Homeowners who repipe with PEX-A consistently report a noticeable improvement in both water pressure and water taste -- PEX is chemically inert and does not interact with any component of the water supply.

EBMUD serves the western portion of the county (Richmond and parts of the surrounding area) with softer Mokelumne River water. However, galvanized steel pipes in the EBMUD service area have still been corroding for 60 to 80+ years and need replacement regardless of water hardness.

Richmond, Martinez, Concord, Pittsburg, and Pleasant Hill have the oldest galvanized steel systems -- homes from the 1940s–60s at or past pipe lifespan. Brentwood and San Ramon have a different concern: polybutylene and Kitec piping from the 1990s–2000s that fails prematurely.
Yes. Some homes built in the 1980s through early 2000s -- particularly in Brentwood, San Ramon, Antioch, and Danville -- were built with polybutylene (PB) or Kitec piping. Both materials are known to fail prematurely and can be difficult to insure. An inspection will identify your pipe material; the inspection fee is credited toward your repipe if you move forward.
